What is Circus Deathmatch?
Simple: Deathmatch is a class for upper quarter design students at the Creative Circus where deadlines are short. Five days. Maybe two weeks. Not the usual ten.
In the real world, deadlines are getting shorter and shorter. (I’ve had a three hour deadline. It stunk, but was very productive and fun, in hindsight.) We introduce students to this phenomenon ’cuz it’s definitely in their futures. Unfortunately, clients will want a designer to be creative, fast and cheap. We’re taking the client out of the equation – but not the teacher/creative director. Hopefully, a student will build some muscles, routines, tricks; they’ll learn to be smarter, more creative, decisive and wildly resourceful.
This may also be a great opportunity for a student to try some whacky new uncomfortable stuff, to get out of their comfort zone. FUN! Of course, this could be an assignment. FUNNER!
Might also be a place to learn some shortcuts. Conceptual, technical, who knows, but it’ll be very helpful to consider that a solution may not be obvious – which will make it more creative, original and fun to look at. Hey, yeah…….POW! Didn’t see that one coming, right? Desperation is quite a motivator.
So, enjoy. Should you feel the need to comment or judge, consider this (10 being the bestestest):
• Idea/Originality: 0 – 10
• Design/Craft: 0 – 10
• Presentation: 0 – 10
Be firm but fair. Is your comment really helpful? (What would your mother say about how you’re talking to someone?) The work is done by students – not professionals – and there’s still a lot they need to learn. So, learn ’em.
